Almost sold my Camera Gear

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

For the past 2 months I been buying a new photography setup, at the moment I ended up with:

Canon 20D
Canon 550EX
Sigma 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DC
Sigma APO 150mm F/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM
Epson P-2000
Feisol CM-1401 Monopod
Manfrotto 190MF4 + 460MG
Soften Omnibounce

And virtually, no time to use it .. so on the spur of the moment I put it all up for sale on the POTN forums, got a few people interested and then had to hold myself back.

I had to remind myself why I was even buying photography gear .. I need an outlet .. and the outlet is not shopping/selling stuff.

My career is very demanding, and can be stressful, so I must find something that I can do that is completely unrelated to computers, internet, sll, etc etc .. nothing technical .. something creative as a past time, and photography was one of my big passions as a kid, so it was a natural choice for an outlet/past time .. when I didn’t find the time I was about to give up and sell it all .. NO

What I must force myself to to is to find the time, get away from it all and just go outdoors, take candid or nature photos, forget about work ..

I am a workaholic .. and I need to stop being one 24x7x365 and enjoy life a little more, it’s been over 5 years since I took a vacation, in 7 weeks we are off to Paris for a much needed one, and I intent to record it all on my over budgeted camera :)

Made COO

Friday, December 16th, 2005

Today I was promoted to COO of Comodo EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Asia).

I am quite proud, and happy, Comodo Europe is the nerve center of our operations, so while the HQ is in the USA, the real action is here, and the job a demanding and respected one.

We merged (Psoft) with Comodo last January, and I didn’t got in as a full time Comodo employee until 6 months ago, so I feel I have achieved allot in such a short period of time, but not being the modest kind, i also know that there is merit to my work, and I deserve it ..

So a new chapter opens up in my life, but this time I hit the ground running, we have a helluva team in Europe, both offices (MANCS and Bradford) have the creme de la creme of our techs, everybody is very capable .. which makes my job so much easier.

I was also pleasantly surprised with the staff, they all welcome me, and seem genuinely happy to have me lead them, I know I wont disappoint them.

But now we have allot of work ahead of us, especially me, i need to learn every single bit and bob about our operations, streamline it, make sure we continue on the right path and dont do mistaques.

People have asked me if I wanted to the COO of the USA office as well .. my answer is NO .. honesty, the US office is more sales and marketing at the moment, and we have a VP of sales there already (the fact I dont think he does his job well is a different story) .. there is nothing for me there, here (Europe) we have the core of support, sales and development, and I much rather be were the action is :)

JASJAR Update

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

I have since received a new Jasjar from Mobile Fun, and it’s much better.

But I still find that sometimes when browsing on 3G or picking up mail, it will fail due to weak signals .. I assume the O2 3G network is just not that great right now, I have turned 3G off and enable GPRS Only .. and sure enought, it works fine, ALL the time .. yes, it’s not 3G speed, but I dont need it to check e-mails .. GPRS suits me just fine.

If I am ever using it to connect with my MAC t the web, then I look for a strong 3G signal and enable it ..

I have also installed TOMTOM 5.1 with a Bluetooth GPS receiver … and I am loving it :) .. you never realize how much you need a Sat Nav until you get one.

My last beef with it i sometimes I find the volume on the headset can be a little low during calls, even at the max volume, but I am ordering a Bluettoth headset, hope that solves that last hurdle.

Jasjar (O2 XDA Exec) Returned

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

A point I forgot to mention .. I received the XDA Exec last week on Wednesday .. and returned it on Friday.

I got very erratic service, hardly ever could I connect to a website, and the mail checking kept on failing.

It was as if the DNS could not resolve the domains .. after allot of googling I decided to retuned it for a replacement unit, it seems nobody else has this problem, so I hope it’s just me :P

The replacement should be here Friday …

New TLD’s for our enom integration

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

I just tested the updated enom API for H-Sphere, with Maxim’s help, we ironed out some bugs on my cluster, and I cant be any more pleased.

Being about to go more into the domain registration arena, I wanted to do as much as possible thru H-Sphere .. but unfortunately we could only use the API to register 11 domain TLD’s .. and it did not include some vital ones like .co.uk

Enom-Before
Before – Only 11 TLD’s

But now with the new version, we can register ALL 38 TLD’s .. means I can really setup a total Domain Registry offer based on H-Sphere

Enom-After
After – a whopping 38 TLD’s

This is great, I want to have a offer that includes domain + domain parking + 1 e-mail account .. all thru H-Sphere .. with this I wont need to use 3rd party products to register the domain automatically, or have to resort to “e-mail” registration, which means no API for some domains and added workload for us .. simply “marvelous” as the brits say :)
