Tera CP Video

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Now that we at UK2 Group have release the Tera CP for 10tb.com I can post here a short video I made about it.

Kasia from the UK2 did the voice-over, we did not had a mic, so we used the built-in one on my MacBook Pro, I was afraid the quality would be bad, but in the end her voice was nice and clear.

Enjoy :)

MindMap

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Ditlev introduced me to MindMap and now I am hooked.
I try a few different programs, but in the end decided to use the same App as everybody else in the office “MindJet MindManager”, the reason for me to start using it was I noticed that I was keeping way too much info on my head, I needed to start writing down some of the stuff I am working on, especially the Tera and VPS.NET projects, so once I started writing them down in a mindmap, it was just like releasing it from the back of your mind, felt good actually, less clutter in the noggin.
As I always say, every day you learn something new :)

Tera CP is coming …

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

For a long while now, we have been working on a new Control Panel for the UK2 Group called Tera CP.

This new CP is unlike anything myself or anybody else has done before  .. it’s a new dynamic experience (not the boring, static content of yesterday), and it will blow users (and competition) away.

I am extremely excited about it, and with the Public Beta coming next week, I cannot yet say more about it (it’s ben hard enough to keep my mouth shut until now), but sometime next week I will post some screenines when we release it ;)

Robot Scene Work

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Tonight I spent some time adjusting the light on the robot scene, the textures also did not felt right last tim I render it, so I adjusted some of it’s size and falloff

Also fine tuned a few elements, the glasses frame was too rough, not it’s using sub-d’s and looking much better.

Still more work to be done, too bad Modo does not have IK

Places

I have installed iLife 09 this weekend and started to sort some of our digital family photos (over 10k of them) by Geo-Location.

The iPhoto pics are easy, they are tagged automatically, the rest is a manual process

I have gone thru a few thousand so far, and a pattern has emerged, it seems we tend to stick to the Atlantic area, we definitely need to go visit Asia :)

Yes, the one in the middle of the Ocean is for real, thats the Azores.

Google afraid to hurt my computer …

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I wonder whats up with Google today, any search I make, it says “This site may harm your computer”

I checked for any security setting, and ever logged out Google, but the result is the same .. so it’s either a setting I cant find, or Google is indeed experiencing “technical difficulties” :)

Here is an example, even Apple’s discussions board is flagged (notice the warning under each page name).

What’s Next ? .. easy .. more Sleep !

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

I’m pondering tonight .. what does the future of Web Hosting Industry hold for those geeks like me who are fortunate (so I think) to make a living working on it.

Back in the day, say first half of this decade, one of the problems that afflicted sysadmins, such as myself at the time, was downtime.

We hated the fact that when a machine went down, somebody had to run all the way to the DC and check what the problem was, this was especially a problem when you where the one that had to do it, I remember having to drive to the DC at 2:00 AM to fix an hardware failure, just to drive back at 5:00 AM for a fault in the same machine.

Yes, with the years advances where made, for once DC’s started to hire more than just mere NocMonkey’s, and a hole culture of DC’s targeting the Web Hosts emerged, but still, to pay $125 for a reboot and a FSCK was something many of us where not comfortable with, or even could afford, luckily the advent of KVM over IP and IPMI made our lives easier, but still, on a more serious problem, it was still you out of bed at 4:00 AM on a cold winter night rushing to the DC while customers complained on every forum they could find.

Yes, some people will say that a Web Host should have 24×7 staff and own their own DC, or pay the DC to fix the problem, but thats just not the real world, many Hosts out there cannot afford the 24×7, and if they have to pay allot of Tech fee’s to the DC, they simply cant afford to offer those dime-a-dozen ubercheap hosting plans that everybody loves, but complains when things go wrong, heck I remember when I owned my own Small DC back in 2002-2005, in the beginning when lights went out at 7:00 PM the place was empty, we could not afford “on site 24×7″ when we opened it. :)

So as I glaze at the upcoming VPS.NET platform, and test the fail-over ability that allows a server to take over and boot the client’s virtual machines from a failed server, in a matter of seconds .. all I can think of is all those late nights almost 10 years ago, when I wished I had such a system, how good it would have felt to wake up to a system notice page about a failure that was self-fixed, turn around and go back to sleep

Yikes … Torrentz

Back to 3D

Friday, December 19th, 2008

A few days back I decided to design the VPS.NET mascot in 3D.

That was a task I gave myself, after all, for most of the 90′s that was my job, 3D Illustration and Animation in a time when 3D was still a tabu word … those where the days .. to create the simplest of the objects was a pain and a lengthy process, but the results where always very rewarding.

I was most proficient on Lightwave 3D, I used it from way back in the Newtek Toaster days, around 2000/2001 I decided I was going to move to Softimage 3D (then doing a name change to XSI), so I bought (then a very very very expensive) License, but as I did that, Alias & Wavefront merged to create “Maya” … so undecided on what to learn next, I stuck to Lightwave and put my other software licenses on the shelf.

It has been over 4 years since I last fired up Lightwave, as I did a few days back, I felt like someone who returns home after being gone for 20 years .. everything has a familiar feeling, but you cant find the cutlery drawer anymore :)

Seeing this was to be a back to basis and I would have to re-learn where everything was, I decided it was time to move on to a new software, so I setup Maya and will do my re-education on it.

Yep, it is back to basics …

Why ?, I know I could call on a friend or two and have them do the VPS.NET robot for me, but I want to do it myself, I miss being creative and doodling in a 3D App, I actually used to be quite good at it, while a career on 3D Animation is forever out of question for me, I will always enjoy the creative process and the satisfaction of designing in 3D.

Gearing up for SAN Testing

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

The greatest task on any job, has to be product tolerance testing.

We are gearing up for a series of tests that will define what sort of SAN we will be using on the VPS Cloud, the actual tests will be performed early next week, for now we are setting up the hardware for it, once we have done it, we will post the results here in the bog.

Here is the info on what we are planning …
